The first step in cleaning and polishing your Silver Plate is to dust and handwash your item. Silver is a very soft metal and any kind of dust or dirt can become an abrasive. Most people agree that silver should not be put in the dishwasher.
You can easily polish your silver with Jamestowne Silver Polish. Jamestowne Silver polish is safe for both antique and new silver products.
You don’t want to polish your items too often, or you will wear off the details in the silver, and can actually eat through the silver plate. Two times a year is plenty.
First, apply the Jamestowne Silver Polish directly on the item. Don’t use too much.
Two, with a soft cloth or towel, rub the polish around. The Jamestowne Antique Silver Polish should work easily, but you may need to use some elbow grease on stains and buildup. Rub in straight strokes. Using circular movements can cause you to scratch circles into the silver. Only press as hard as you need to to remove the tarnish. You don’t want to remove the silver. Rinse the object off in cold water.
Finally, take a soft clean towel or cloth and buff the object. If you are using microfiber, read the instructions on the microfiber, prior to using it on silver, as it is known to scratch.
